Achieving Prolonged Antibody Bioactivity
Luciana Borio and Scott Gottlieb’s “Antibodies Can Be the Bridge to a Vaccine” (op-ed, July 5) discusses the immediate need to develop more effective therapies against Covid-19, and Gottlieb’s previous op ed piece (May 3) discusses the challenge of developing such antibodies. Though such therapy appears promising in light of its effectiveness in reducing the risk of death from Ebola in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in a comparative treatment study by Regeneron, Gottlieb warns that the ability of these engineered antibodies in producing coronavirus fighting immune cells are temporary, resulting in only several weeks of effectiveness. This was confirmed in a WSJ interview on June 12 with Regeneron, that their new Covid19 combination drug of injected antibodies may only be capable of neutralizing the virus for a short time, perhaps requiring monthly dosing. Recently, the potential to achieve elevated antibody activity throughout extended release intervals has been shown by Sustained Nano Systems, part of the Long Island High Technology Incubator at Stony Brook University. Utilizing their proprietary Densification process, animal models indicate the prolonged bioactivity of antibody for as long as one year following a single administration.
